Solidarity Statement from Driftless Market
To the friends of Driftless Market,
We are pained and outraged that, yet again, another black life was ended too soon. The murder of George Floyd has caused a breaking point for many black people throughout the country. Countless years of systemic oppression in this country’s history have led to our current climate. We condemn those systems, white supremacy, and all forms of racism in our society. We stand with and support the black community, and we pledge to continue to fight for racial justice. We know that the work we do can never remedy the pain black people have felt, but we hope that our work will allow for space where black people feel welcomed and at home. We are working to make a safer future through our actions today.
As you are reading this message, you may feel inclined to help in some capacity. An easy and effective way to help, if you are able to, is to donate to nonprofits working to create a just world. On a local level, Freedom Inc. is actively working with Wisconsin communities in the fight to “end violence against people of color, women, those that non-traditionally gender identify, youth, and our elders; to promote a healthy lifestyle.”
Because two of our newest owners moved from Minneapolis to become small business owners, we also acknowledge the pain some businesses are facing after looting. This is something that all four owners can relate to on a personal level; however, materials can be replaced, but a loss of life cannot. In order to help rebuild local businesses in Minneapolis that need it most, please consider donating to Lake Street Council. All funds will go directly back to local businesses & non-profits impacted the most.
In addition to supporting efforts monetarily, we invite you to learn more about how to fight racism through this book list created by Room of One’s Own.
In solidarity,
Driftless Market and Deli
